Prof. Maarten Janssen

Senior Consultant

Maarten is a senior Academic Consultant to CEG and a Professor of Economics at the University of Vienna. He regularly advises private companies and public authorities throughout Europe. He has acted as an expert witness in various court cases and as an arbiter in a regulation case. Maarten has particular expertise in the telecommunications sector, where he has (among other things) extensive expertise advising European operators in auctions. He has additionally worked on abuse of dominant position, collusive practices, damages, and state aid cases across a range of sectors including sports shoes, bicycles, and elevators.

In his academic work, Maarten applies game theory to study the strategic role of information in markets. He has published extensively on topics in consumer search and auctions in top international journals such as American Economic Review, The Review of Economic Studies, Rand Journal of Economics, Economic Journal, International Economic Review, Journal of Economic Theory, Management Science, Marketing Science, Journal of Industrial Economics, International Journal of Industrial Organization and the European Economic Review.

Maarten’s leading role in consulting and in academia enables him to provide practical and effective advice to clients drawing on the latest insights from the economic literature.

Until 2008 Maarten was a professor of Erasmus University Rotterdam and director of the Tinbergen Institute. He remains active in advising companies in the Netherlands.

Recent Work

Maarten has recently been working on supporting telecom companies in different auctions throughout Central and eastern Europe. He also has been actively involved in the radio frequency auction and a cartel damages case, both in the Netherlands.

Recognition

Maarten is included in the top ranking academic economists in the German speaking world by the leading German financial paper Handelsblatt. He is elected foreign member of the Royal Holland Society of Sciences and Humanities, an honorary professor at the Higher School of Economics (Moscow) and fellow of the CEPR (London) and ZEW (Mannheim).
